Actively choose hope

This month was Black History Month, a celebration of our differences and experiences.

We enjoyed a few days of snow, Valentine’s day, and explored new games.

With kindness being so important this month we focussed on the little things we can do for each other, such as how important a please or thank you can be.

We spent a great deal of time enjoying books written by and about our beautiful black community.

The Joeys favorite book was ‘Parker looks up’, about a little girl exploring an art gallery and finding inspiration and representation in a painting of Michelle Obama.

We read it quite a few times, listening to music created by black bands and singers.

Our favorite dancing music was 100% Motown from the 60’s and 70’s.

Our Roos Crew had the pleasure of a visit from a Dungeons and Dragons Wizard, Mr Steve.

Our adventure began with a treasure hunt, finding gold coins and ancient runes! Choosing our positions within a team to help us understand a little about story telling and teamwork.

After we created our characters, we waged battle with a dragon and on a real D&D board.

Our little friends were able to play with real D&D figurines and dice, as Dungeon Master Steve guided us through magical forests and castles.

Every one had a wonderful time and no one wanted to stop playing.

I think we will be creating our stories and working on our characters for a long time.

Valentine’s day brought a celebration of friendship and kindness.

We read books about love and being a good friend.

During our ‘Palentines’ party, we made our cupcakes with dragon fruit icing, blueberries and dried strawberries and pineapple!

The Joeys spent lots of time practicing cutting out hearts and making bookmarks for our families.

We all shared treats from our classmates and spent a little extra time baking or writing messages by hand.

It always warms my heart that our little friends are more excited to give their gifts than receive them.

Thank you so much Mr Steve for showing us another way to explore imaginative play.

We all had so much fun and we certainly have a few D&D players in the making!

Let me know if you are interested in a Dungeons and Dragons club.

If you are looking for a great source of second hand books, I want to encourage looking at Thiftbooks and Abebooks for books representation, inclusion, kindness and celebration.

As you know, books are a wonderful way to start conversations and learn about tricky topics.

Lastly, Spring is almost here so start packing those hats, sunglasses and sunscreen.

I wanted to remind everyone that Wombat Hollow Farm is a safe place for all.

So pack a good pair of boots, a big snack and a whole lot of kindness.

We love you.

Ms Dee, Noodles and crew.
